Job Specification - Web Developer

THE ROLE

Since the creation of the Digital Marketing group, it has become necessary to further develop the production department as well as the technology platform that integrates the member companies. Therefore, it has been necessary to bring an experienced Developer into the team to add extra resource, skills and experience.

The role would include three main aspects;

1) working as part of the team on day-to-day production of microsite, landing page and email campaigns

2) working as part of the team as a PHP web developer on larger more sophisticated application projects

3) working as part of the team on aspects of the agency’s technical research and development activities

1) Campaign Production

The production/development team is currently a small team and due to the growth of Inbox and the formation of the Digital Marketing group, it is necessary to expand the development resource, experience and skills within the team.

A web developer would be expected to work as part of a team building, tracking and testing campaigns on a day-to-day basis. This will involve working from designs provided by the creative team and will include building and deploying email campaigns, building microsites and landing pages, constructing campaign reporting, designing and working with campaign based databases and client data.

In summary, the elements of this part of the role would involve;

  • Building end to end marketing campaigns utilising email, web, mobile, banners and viral games
  • Building, tracking, testing and deploying email marketing campaigns
  • Developing and testing campaign microsites and landing pages
  • Database design, creation & manipulation using MYSQL and other client databases
  • Basic Linux based operations for testing and monitoring campaigns
  • Managing deliverability levels of our clients email deployment systems

2) Web Development

The production/development team also develops more complex web based applications on behalf of its clients. These are basically larger project-managed applications and require a deeper understanding of PHP, MYSQL, web development techniques and testing.

To summarise, the role of web developer would also involve the following aspects;

  • Developing and testing complex web based applications as part of the production team
  • End to End campaign project management
  • Supporting Client Services for campaign briefing/specification
  • Writing Technical Specifications and Documentation
  • Managing, developing and documenting integration projects with external partners and clients
  • Working with integration technologies such as SOAP and XML

3) New technology research and integration

Inbox digital is at the forefront of the digital marketing industry and one factor that supports this placing is the use and knowledge of all emerging technologies. It is the responsibility of the technical director to ensure that the agency is utilising, and is at least knowledgeable about, all forefront technologies and this includes web development, email technology, mobile, flash and shockwave advancements, CMS Systems, web analytics, viral and online advertising opportunities and data analysis techniques.

Each member of the team has specialisms in different areas and therefore, the responsibility for the Agency’s technical R&D and general development has been split up accordingly to individual staff members within the team who have relevant skills and experience.

The current focus lies in the following areas, so any experience in any of these would be beneficial but not essential;

  • Web Analytics technologies
  • Email Deliverability and Infrastructure
  • Server performance, tuning and monitoring
  • Development Practices and Methodologies
  • Pioneering Web Development technologies
  • CMS systems
  • Mobile Marketing

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

ESSENTIAL

  • Experience of web-based application development. (Primarily PHP, PERL and CGI but other technologies could be advantageous)
  • Experience of HTML/XHTML/CSS website/microsite development including JavaScript
  • Experience of SQL Database design, optimisation, management and analysis. (Primarily MYSQL but other database system experience would be advantageous)
  • Experience of database integration, security, accessibility and UI development
  • Experience of Linux and Apache functionality and configuration
  • Experience of web development tools such as Dreamweaver and Photoshop
  • Experience of interface technologies such as SOAP/FTP/SCP/SSH/SOCKETS/XML
  • Experience with rich media development platforms such as flash or shockwave
  • An understanding of the principals of email delivery and standards
  • A demonstration of the ability to embrace emerging technologies (e.g. CMS systems, AJAX, Facebook development, Web 2.0, Java, mobile)

DESIRABLE

  • Object Oriented Analysis & Design (ideally with PHP5)
  • Writing technical specifications, conducting feasibility studies, developing testing plans
  • Client liaison, time plan creation and management, writing data integration specifications
