THE ROLE

Historically, the agency has run with very distinct creative and development departments with the producers in the team focussing purely on the development aspects of each campaign. However, as the agency has grown there has become a need for a cross-over function within the production department where certain producers can also fulfil some basic design tasks within a campaign.

For example, this would potentially be required if we had a large number of email templates to design from one master design for a client. In the past, a campaign such as this would require a lot of interchange back and forth between the creative and production departments and the main designer would need to carry out the design of every template separately, even though that are all very similar.

In order to make processes such as this more efficient, we are now looking for a web developer/producer who can carry out standard web development tasks as specified, but someone can also take a master design from the creative department and then re-design new templates.

The role would include three main aspects;

1) working as part of the team on day-to-day production of microsite, landing page and email campaigns

2) carrying out simple design tasks under the guidance of the campaign designers for certain campaigns

3) contributing to our R&D focus in terms of the interaction between design and technology within the agency

1) Campaign Production

The production/development team is currently a small team and due to the growth of Inbox and the formation of the Digital Marketing group, it is necessary to expand the development resource, experience and skills within the team.

A web developer would be expected to work as part of a team building, tracking and testing these campaigns on a day-to-day basis. This will involve working from designs provided by the creative team and this will include building and deploying email campaigns, building microsites and landing pages, constructing campaign reporting, designing and working with campaign based databases and client data.

In summary, the elements of this part of the role would involve;

  • Building end to end marketing campaigns utilising email, web, mobile, banners and viral games
  • Building, tracking, testing and deploying email marketing campaigns
  • Developing and testing campaign web sites, microsites and landing pages
  • Basic database design, creation & manipulation using MYSQL and other client databases
  • Basic back-end coding using PHP and similar technologies
  • Basic Linux based operations for testing and monitoring campaigns
  • Managing deliverability levels of our clients email deployment systems

    2) Design Tasks

The will also be the requirement on certain campaigns/clients to help out the creative team with some design work. This would be an occasional element to the role and would involve;

  • Taking a design template from the creative department and creating new designs based on these guidelines
  • Designing simple microsites under the guidance of the creative department
  • Carrying out simple design tasks such as creating buttons and producing basic banners

3) Design and technology R&D tasks

Each member of the production/web development team has a role to play in the overall department’s R&D development. As this role is for a web developer with a design focus, it follows that any design based R&D requirements would also fall into this role. This would be an evolving element of the role but in essence it would involve tasks such as;

  • Researching new web development technologies in terms of how this effects design possibilities
  • Developing technological based design guidelines for the creative department
  • Acting as an interface between the creative and production departments
  • Attending the creative review meetings as a production representative

    ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

    • Experience of HTML/XHTML development including CSS and Javascript
    • Experience of web development tools such as Dreamweaver and Photoshop
    • An understanding of the principals of email delivery and standards
    • Basic understanding of server side coding in PHP
    • Basic understanding of Linux operating system
    • Ability to embrace emerging technologies (e.g. CMS systems, AJAX, Facebook development, Web 2.0, Java, Mobile)
    • Ability to demonstrate good web design skills and experience
    • DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

      • Experience of SQL Database design, optimisation, management and analysis. (Primarily MYSQL but other database system experience would also be advantageous)
      • Experience of web-based application development. (Primarily PHP, PERL and CGI but other technologies could be advantageous)
      • Experience of database integration, security, accessibility and UI development
      • Experience of interface technologies such as SOAP/FTP/SCP/SSH/SOCKETS/XML
      • Experience with rich media development platforms such as flash or shockwave
